Settlement strategies of the Dominicans in Palermo from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque

2014

This paper proposes some reflections on the settlement strategies pursued by the Dominicans in Palermo between the founding of the first conventual settlements, from the 13th century to the transformations of the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of expansion and renovation projects imposed by the Counter-Reformation. The research analyzes for the first time the dialogue between the architecture promoted by the Dominicans and the becoming of the city over the centuries through the continuous and articulated design traces and construction relating to different locations pertaining to enforcement, male (San Domenico and Santa Cita) and female (Santa Caterina and Santa Maria della Pietà), pl…

In contemporary "liquidity," the possibility of a cure for widespread aphasia imposes a rethinking that coincides with the word re-use, in its …

Percorsi virtuosi di uso del territorio. Il caso studio della città di Agrigento

2020

The historical period we are living leads to a serious reflection on future programmatic lines of planning. The use of classical planning is insufficient with respect to the needs of citizens. It is necessary to undertake really effective paths, to finalize the limited economic resources towards shared and useful projects - to know how to listen to the desiree of citizens, especially those related to places. Our attention is turned to Agrigento city, where the almost twenty-year recourse to some attempts at participatory planning, even in strategic planning, is as appreciable as it is objectively sterile, inadequate to address issues of utmost importance. The survey we propose returns the r…

Landscape Architecture and the Green Deal Dare: Five Successful Experiences in Urban Open Spaces

2022

The present work focuses on European cities’ environments and open spaces, aiming to demonstrate how, through landscape architecture, it is possible to respond effectively to many of the ecological and social hardships that the Green Deal aspires to alleviate. It was signed in 2019 by all of the member countries of the Union, seeks to reverse the climate change trend by establishing a series of goals for improving environmental and economic quality for 2030 and 2050 and also aims to enact social justice in rural areas and in the urban environment. Landscape architecture, which is the art of combining the physical and immaterial elements in cities’ open spaces, is taken in this w…

A Paradigm Interpreting the City and the Analytic Network Process for the Management of Urban Transformations

2018

When urban and environmental transformations occur in areas where the equilibrium between nature and culture is complex and fragile, public ad-ministrations could decide to induce private investments using several tools, such as financial contributions to those projects of refurbishment that better re-spect the purpose of improving the environmental quality and of preserving the local architecture. Multicriteria models may support public decision process re-garding this issue, but it is essential to adopt a scientific paradigm that provides a major theoretical reference. This study proposes the development of a net-work model based on the scientific paradigm by Rizzo and the Analytic Net-wo…

In the conquest of Valencia in 1238 and its subsequent Christianization we find the genesis of the convent city. Over the centuries the dominant presence of convents and monasteries determined various aspects of the city, urban development being one of them. However, the influence and power that these monasteries exercised diminished gradually with the reduction in the number of their members and foundations. The point of no return comes with the nineteenth century when the successive confiscations and the consolidation of the bourgeoisie mean its fading. This study aims to make an approach to the role that the destruction of convents and monasteries played in the urban development and prog…
